How to choose a perfume for men

Choosing a men’s perfume often ends with the same bottle that is already on the shelf, or with a guess for a gift. In fact, three questions are enough: where the scent will be worn, what kind of fragrance he likes and how long it should last.

1. Start with a fragrance family

Most men’s perfumes fall into a few families:

  • Fresh – citrus, sea, green grass. Light and clean, ideal for daytime, work and warm weather.
  • Woody – cedar, vetiver, sandalwood. Calm and confident, suitable almost anywhere.
  • Oriental – amber, vanilla, oud, spices. Warm and noticeable, especially good for evenings and cold weather.
  • Sweet – tonka bean, coffee, caramel. Modern and compliment-friendly, but best used in moderation.

If you are not sure where to start: choose a fresh or woody scent for the day and an oriental or sweet one for the evening.

2. Test it on skin, not on paper

A scent smells different on a paper strip than on skin – skin warms it up and changes it. That is why a tester is the best way: wear the scent for a few days before buying the full bottle. Arabic perfumes come with 2 ml samples and Olfazeta testers start from 1 € – you will find them under Minis and testers.

3. Choose the concentration

The higher the concentration, the longer the scent lasts. Eau de Toilette is usually noticeable for a few hours, Eau de Parfum for a whole working day, and extraits and oil perfumes even longer. More about this in the article EDP, EDT, extrait – what is the difference.

4. If you are choosing a gift

  • Look at what he already wears – it is the best hint to the fragrance family.
  • If you are unsure, choose a woody or fresh scent – they are liked most widely.
  • Add a tester of another scent – so he can try something new as well.
  • We can gift-wrap the order and add a card with your message.
